William Zepeda continued his ascension of the lightweight division, beating the brakes off Maxi Hughes in Las Vegas and stopping Hughes in 4 rounds. On the other hand, Jose Zepeda suffered a defeat in his most recent bout, after he was stopped with a spiteful body shot by Dalton Smith in the 5th round. A statement victory for Smith, as the super lightweight contender was fighting in his hometown of Sheffield, England.

Zepeda vs Hughes looked like it could be an interesting matchup. Maxi Hughes has previously held the IBO title, before losing it in a close contest against former world champion George Kambosos last year. So how would Zepeda fair against an intelligent boxer like Hughes?

The first round was cagey, as Hughes moved well around the ring. Initially, Zepeda did not apply the type of pressure we're used to seeing in the opening round. However, from the second round onward, Zepeda started to take over. And Hughes started to fall apart. The relentless onslaught to the body provided Zepeda with openings to attack the skull of Maxi Hughes. Damage continued to be delivered in rounds 3 and 4, before the Hughes corner decided that the fight should no longer continue.

Zepeda, now standing at 30-0, has comfortably established himself as one of the best lightweights in the world. With such an thrilling fighting style, now is the time to provide the fans with some epic battles. Shakur-Zepeda anyone? Anybody?! That fight NEEDS to happen! Bring boxing back to its throwback era, where the best continue to fight the best. For prestigous world title honours. Creating history that lasts for years to come. LETS GET IT ON!

Across the pond, Jose Zepeda headed into his fight against rising contender Dalton Smith as the heavy underdog. Zepeda had lost 2 of his last 3 fights, and at 34, probably entering the final stages of his career. A win against Dalton Smith could have the potential to reignite a career though. And may have been a catalyst toward another shot at a world title.

Unfortunately for Zepeda, being on the end of an upset was not on Dalton Smith's agenda. Fighting in his hometown for the 3rd time, Smith is looking to bring more big nights to the city of Sheffield. Following in the footsteps of Sheffield legends before him, like Prince Naseem Hamed and Kell Brook. Smith's performance on Saturday night provided his fans with further evidence that he is a force to reckoned with, and a show not to be missed.

Zepeda started the fight on the front foot, attempting to impose himself on Smith early. But Smith quickly found his rhythm and began to pick his shots with accurate precision. It was in the 5th round that Dalton Smith landed THE shot. A straight right to the body that sent Zepeda to his knees. He failed to beat the 10 count and the fight was stopped. Smith (16-0) is hoping to be a part of even bigger fights, with an all-British battle against Adam Azim being top of the list!

Por Zepeda Uno, sky is the limit. Hopefully William Zepeda can capitalise on his own momentum and begin his pursuit of world titles. Preferably against Shakur Stevenson, but honestly, Zepeda has a lot of options. As long as his next fight is for a world title, I'm happy.

Por Zepeda Dos, I'm not sure how much is left for him to accomplish in the sport. After receiving his 5th loss and losing back to back fights against young talented contenders, it raises the question…What more is Jose Zepeda looking for in his career? Only Zepeda can answer that question, but regardless of the response, it’s been a great career.
