'The Gentleman' Chris Billam-Smith secured a huge win at Selurst Park, as he retained his WBO world title and avenged his only loss against familar foe Richard Riakporhe. Both Billam-Smith and Riakporhe put it all on the line in their stadium title fight, but Billam-Smith's experience proved to be the key factor on his way to a Unanimous Decision victory in South London.
10,000+ spectators made their way through the turnstiles at Selhurst Park to watch the rematch between Billam-Smith and Riakporhe. It was expected to be a slugfest between two fighters who carry real power at the cruiserweight division. To some extent, it was. Heavy bombs were being thrown throughout the fight, but nothing of note landing in the early period of the fights.
After already sharing 12 rounds together, some thought they would enter the fight in Round 13, picking up exactly where they left it 5 years ago. However, 5 years is a long time and both these fighters are now very different. Riakporhe, now much more refined and a little more well known, was looking to win a world title at his first attempt. A lack of real tests ahead of his challenge raised questions from the fans and the champ himself. Billam-Smith used the loss against Riakporhe as fuel in his battles on his way to winning the WBO cruiserweight world title.

Billam-Smith used all the experience gained in those fights for his third title defence against Riakporhe. Utilising his superior boxing skills, Billam-Smith was able to connect with punches to the head and body of Riakporhe. The challenger Riakporhe landed a few good shots in the fight, but without the force or frequency to help him win the fight. Billam-Smith did not face too much damage and won by Unanimous Decision to comfortably retain his title. #AndStill WBO Cruiserweight world champion.
Unification fights now lie in wait for Billam-Smith, with Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez looking to be first on the list. A good fight for Billam-Smith, who has definitely earned the right to test himself amongst the world's best. Richard Riakporhe is likely to bounce back, and could seek a trilogy in the future, but June 15 saw defeated for the first time at the hands of 'The Gentleman'
