Mexico vs Peurto Rico is a rivalry that is rooted in boxing history. The weekend of Mexican Independence Day was no different and Vegas was the place to be on Sept 14. Fans of both Canelo Alvarez and Edgar Berlanga were in full force and brought unmatched energy to the T-Mobile Arena. The unified champion Canelo was once again the heavy favourite, and showed why with an expert victory against brash challenger Berlanga.

The current King of the Super Middleweight division remains Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. As one of the marquee attractions in the sport of boxing, Canelo utilises his position as the King very well. One of the perks of being King is that you can hand pick who challenges for your world titles. On this occasion, it was the brash contender Edgar Berlanga from Brooklyn, New York. Berlanga gained a notable profile from16 straight KO wins in the first round, in his first 16 fights. However, as Berlanga had stepped up in competition the KOs dried up and the performances were less convincing.

Fans were curious to see whether Berlanga would back up everything he said in the build up to this fight. Berlanga had recently stopped Padraig McCrory in the 6th round, so there was hope that the challenger could bring some of that power and ferocity to this fight. Berlanga had never competed at this level up until this point, and nobody on his resume would suggest he was ready for this type of test. The promotion of this fight sold itself and in the end it was what was best for business. Mexico vs Puerto Rico was the sell, but in truth it was the Canelo Show once again.
