It was meant to be a homecoming fight for the super lightweight world champion and feared Puerto Rican Subriel Matias on June 15. A weekend full of fights provided the fans with another exciting match up as Australian Liam Paro challenged Matias for his IBF world title. Paro was considered a big underdog against a man that has won by knockout in every one of his victories. However, Paro dealt with the boogeyman on his way to another great victory for Australian boxing.

Subriel Matias (20-1, 20KOs) was considered one of the most dangerous fighters in boxing, with an intimidating record and a fighting style that almost guarantees pain to his opponent, it’s no wonder not many were in a rush to challenge the Puero Rican world champion. Up stepped Liam Paro, 24-0 going into the fight and fresh of a fantastic KO win against American super lightweight contender Montana Love. Paro was confident throughout the build up and made it clear he did not fear the Boogeyman Subriel Matias.

From the opening bell Paro was not afraid to let his hands go, throwing left and right hands from the southpaw stance. The challenger stayed in the pocket with the feared champion and let him know it was not going to be in an easy night. Matias took a couple of rounds to really get into the fight, but once he did it made for a really good spectacle.

The Puerto Rican crowd made themselves known throughout the fight, incredibly loud in their support of Matias. This did not disrupt the rhythm of Paro however, who remained relentless in his attack of Matias. His defensive skills allowed him to avoid any truly damaming punches, but the crowd still showed their joy every time the champion did land.

After the final bell and a good fight for the fans, the judges awarded Paro’s activity and accuracy with a Unanimous Decision victory in the home of the champion. #AndTheNew WBA super lightweight world champion. Another great victory for Australian boxing, who have delivered yet another world champion.

Matias (20-2) will be disappointed with the loss, but gave no excuses and said Paro was the better man on the night. A rematch would not be a bad option, Paro (25-0, 15KOs) may have his eyes set on bigger and better fights though. Never a boring day in the 140lb division!
